Governor Ober mourns legendary Anyanya One General, Akol

The governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Simon Ober, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of General Albino Akol Akol, a revered figure in South Sudanese history and a hero of the Anyanya One liberation movement.

Gen. Akol passed away in Nairobi, Kenya, on Saturday due to an undisclosed illness.

In a heartfelt condolence message, Governor Ober described the late general as a statesman whose legacy transcended borders, serving both former Sudan and South Sudan in various high-ranking roles.

“On behalf of my family and the government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, I extend my deepest condolences on the unfortunate passing of Gen. Albino Akol Akol,” Ober said. “He was a stalwart of the liberation struggle and a pivotal figure in the historic 1972 peace agreement.”

Governor Ober praised Gen. Akol’s illustrious career, highlighting his service as Governor of the Bahr el Ghazal region and his leadership as Sudan’s Minister of Transport.

The late also held prominent positions in the South Sudan Government (GOSS), including Minister of Petroleum and Mining and Minister of Youth and Sports.

The late general was also a family man, notably the father of Lily Albino Akol, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.

The news of Gen. Akol’s passing sent shockwaves across South Sudan, prompting tributes from officials and citizens alike. Among them was Ateny Wek Ateny, the former Press Secretary to the President, who described Gen. Akol as a national treasure.

“The untimely passing of Gen. Albino Akol Akol is a devastating loss,” Ateny remarked. “He was an icon, a hero of heroes, and an encyclopedia of military and political knowledge. South Sudan has lost one of its finest sons.”

As the nation mourns the loss of a true legend, the memory of Gen. Akol’s unwavering dedication to his country’s freedom and prosperity will forever inspire generations to come.
