The United States Embassy in South Sudan has issued a stern warning about visa fraud, emphasizing its severe legal repercussions for offenders in the U.S.
In a statement obtained by Standard Zone News, the embassy underscored the high security of U.S. visas, asserting that any attempt to counterfeit them would be detected.
“The U.S. visa process is the most secure in the world. Yet, some individuals unwisely attempt to cheat the system by using fake documents, lying on applications, or overstaying their visas. These acts constitute visa fraud, a serious crime,” the embassy stated.
The statement further read “For those considering the dangerous journey to illegally cross into the United States, understand that your safety, and even your life, are at risk”
Although the U.S. statement did not single out a particular nation or institution, it comes amid ongoing diplomatic frictions between South Sudan and the United States over deportations and visa restrictions.
Tensions escalated when South Sudan initially refused entry to a U.S. deportee, Makulu Kintu, a Congolese national accused of impersonating Nimeri Garang. The refusal led Washington to accuse Juba of obstructing deportations, prompting the imposition of a visa ban on South Sudanese nationals, a policy now under review.
For this matter, if the South Sudanese government fails to comply with U.S. directives, further punitive measures may be considered.
In a move to restore diplomatic relations, South Sudan reversed its stance and admitted Mr. Kintu into the country, reaffirming its commitment to cooperation. However, the U.S. visa ban remains in effect, leaving many South Sudanese students and residents in the U.S. uncertain about their status.
In response, the South Sudanese government has proposed sending high-level delegations to Washington for bilateral negotiations.
A press statement issued Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation revealed that Foreign Minister, Mr. Minister Monday Samaya, had formally contacted U.S. Secretary of State Mr. Marco Rubio to reaffirm South Sudan’s commitment to strong diplomatic ties.
According to the ministry, both diplomats intend to discuss relations and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation.
“The Ministry further announces that the Honorable Minister is planning an official bilateral visit to the United States to engage with his U.S. counterpart on matters of mutual interest and cooperation. This underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic, political, and economic relations with the United States,” the statement read.
