South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir acknowledges hardships faced by public servants and promises improvements in pay, working conditions, and accountability.

In his official statement, the president called on workers to uphold dignity, unity, and shared responsibility, despite the ongoing economic hardships and salary delays many continue to face.

“I urge all of us to continue working in unity, guided by the principles of dignity, accountability, and shared responsibility,” Kiir said in his address.

He praised the contributions of workers to the country’s development and stability, while acknowledging that many are operating under difficult and demoralizing conditions.

Key challenges facing South Sudan’s labour force include chronic delays in salary payments, lack of insurance and welfare systems, and weak protections for public servants issues that have, in some cases, contributed to corruption and inefficiency within the workforce.

Kiir assured workers that his government remains committed to tackling these issues head-on.

“We recognize the challenges you endure,” he said. “I assure you; we remain committed to improving your working conditions, ensuring timely salary payments, and implementing sustainable reforms to uplift the public sector.”

His message comes as the Ministry of Finance announced the successful processing and disbursement of April 2025 salaries for all government agencies, organized forces, and foreign missions.

In a circular dated April 24, the ministry confirmed that salary payments had been credited to relevant accounts at both national and sub-national levels.

While this marks progress, significant arrears from 2024 remain unsettled. There is still no clear timeline for their clearance, leaving many civil servants in limbo.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to long-term economic reforms to support recovery and ensure fiscal stability.

Kiir closed his message with a heartfelt tribute to the country’s workers: “On this important occasion of Labour Day, I extend my appreciation to all the hardworking men and women of South Sudan. This is a tribute to your tireless efforts and unwavering dedication to the growth and development of our beloved country.”

International Labour Day is observed globally on May 1st to recognize workers’ rights and achievements, and to promote fair working conditions and social justice.
