President Salva Kiir has called on newly appointed top security officials to prioritize addressing the pressing challenges facing South Sudan.
During a swearing-in ceremony on Monday, President Kiir urged Madut Dut Yel, the new Presidential Advisor on National Security, and Thoi Chany Reat, the newly appointed Director General of the General Intelligence Bureau, to show unwavering dedication to national service.
“President Kiir urged the new officials to display dedication and commitment to the service of the nation. Let’s focus on addressing the challenges facing our country,” read a statement obtained by Standard Zone News.
The statement also highlighted Kiir’s call for national unity in overcoming the country’s current difficulties, urging the officials to work collaboratively with other institutions to foster a peaceful and cohesive society.
The President’s remarks come amid a deteriorating security situation marked by widespread skirmishes across various parts of the country. Political tensions have recently flared, particularly over unresolved security arrangements, following deadly clashes in Nasir and Ulang counties of Upper Nile State.
The violence, reportedly involving the White Army, believed to be aligned with both the SPLA-IO and the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces, has raised alarm over the fragile peace process.
The situation escalated further when First Vice President and SPLM/A-IO Chairman Dr. Riek Machar was placed under house arrest for allegedly inciting unrest in the two counties.
