Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin had returned to Juba following a trip to Rome, Italy, where he attended the burial of Pope Francis and participated in the conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV.
The Cardinal arrived on Tuesday at Juba International Airport where a large number of clergy, faithful, and members of the public had gathered to receive him. He proceeded directly to St. Joseph Parish, where more than 2,000 congregants had assembled for a special welcoming ceremony.
At the church, Cardinal Ameyu sprinkled holy water on the congregation as a traditional gesture of blessing as choirs sang hymns and prayers were offered to mark his return from the Vatican.
This was Cardinal Ameyu’s first time attending a papal conclave, a solemn gathering of cardinals from around the world to elect a new pope. His participation marked a significant moment for the South Sudanese Catholic Church, placing it in direct engagement with the global Catholic leadership.
Addressing the congregation at St. Joseph Church, Cardinal Ameyu shared details of his meeting with the newly elected Pope Leo XIV. He said he had a personal conversation with the Pope shortly after the conclave.
“I spoke with him and explained our country’s situation,” Cardinal Ameyu said. “I told him that Pope Francis had always stood with South Sudan, and now that he is gone, we are looking to him (Pope Leo XIV) for continued spiritual support.”
According to the Cardinal, the new Pope responded with compassion and emphasized the importance of prayer for the people of South Sudan.
Cardinal Ameyu concluded his address by thanking the faithful for their warm reception and encouraged them to remain strong in their faith.
