Civil society activist Edmund Yakani has applauded the recent meeting between Vice President Rebecca Nyandeng and President Salva Kiir, stating that it should serve as the foundation for broader dialogue among South Sudan’s leaders and political parties.
He emphasized that sustained discussions among key political figures are essential for addressing governance challenges and fostering national stability.
Yakani, who leads the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), described the engagement as “a positive step” and urged leaders to prioritize direct dialogue on pressing national issues, including political inclusivity, security reforms, and economic development.
“The meeting was an encouraging development. It must now inspire meaningful conversations between political parties, ensuring that leaders come together to resolve critical national concerns,” Yakani stated.
His remarks come after Nyandeng’s return from Uganda, where she met President Yoweri Museveni before holding talks with President Kiir on Monday. The discussions covered national issues such as South Sudan’s political landscape and economic situation.
Yakani stressed the importance of proactive engagement among the country’s leadership, highlighting that effective governance can only be achieved through collective decision-making and dialogue.
“As a watchdog, we appeal to leaders at the presidency level to hold strategic discussions that lay the foundation for peace and stability,” he said. “This is a critical moment for South Sudan, and our leaders must unite to forge solutions that benefit all citizens.”
The ongoing political fragmentation, armed conflicts, and security challenges that hinder efforts toward national progress remain a concern among the citizens yearning peace.
As South Sudan faces complex political and economic realities, Yakani’s call for dialogue underscores the urgent need for constructive engagement and unity among leaders to secure long-term stability and development.
