Jonglei State Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok has instructed the newly appointed Commissioner of the State Revenue Authority to prioritize transparency and accountability in tax collection and expenditure.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of state officials, including Revenue Commissioner Donge Gai Donge, Kok emphasized that efficient revenue collection is essential for funding development programs and improving public services.

He urged the commissioner to strengthen collection efforts and ensure that state funds are used in the public interest, rather than being misappropriated by officials.

“The Revenue Commission demands commitment and sacrifice. Your performance will determine whether campaign promises are fulfilled and transparency is guaranteed in revenue collection and expenditure,” Kok stated, reinforcing the importance of ethical financial management.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by inadequate revenue, Kok noted that transparent financial oversight could help address infrastructure gaps and enhance essential services, reminding state leaders of their constitutional duty to serve citizens with integrity, particularly as local government remains the closest governing body to the people.

Concerns over corruption and mismanagement in Jonglei’s revenue collection surfaced earlier this year when top officials issued conflicting statements regarding how Personal Income Tax (PIT) funds were spent.

The former administration traded accusations over actual tax remittances, management, and expenditure, with reports initially indicating a monthly collection of $190,000, though unverified claims suggested the figure was as high as $300,000.

These discrepancies have deepened concerns about financial mismanagement at the state level, fueling public frustration over the lack of accountability in tax revenue allocation.

As Commissioner Donge steps into his new role, many hope his leadership will help curb corruption, improve tax collection, and restore public confidence in the state’s financial practices.
