In a bid to boost agricultural productivity in Kajokeji County, Central Equatoria State, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has donated essential farming seeds to the county’s agriculture department.

Speaking after receiving the donation, Murye Alex, head of the Department of Agriculture in Kajokeji County, stated that the initiative will benefit over 5,000 people, with priority given to returnees, internally displaced persons, and the local host community.

“With many of our people returning, it is crucial to help them settle. Many lack seeds for farming, and this support will enable them to revive agricultural activities in the county,” Alex said.

Despite the donation, Alex called for further assistance, stressing that the provided seedlings may not be sufficient for all intended beneficiaries, revealing that the supplies include maize, cowpeas, various vegetable seeds, and farming tools such as hoes.

“I am sure our farmers are pleased with FAO’s support. It will boost food production and overall productivity in Kajokeji County,” he added.

Meanwhile, Alfred Sokiri, one of the beneficiaries, praised FAO and the county authorities for their timely intervention ahead of the rainy season.

“I am impressed with FAO’s commitment to supporting agriculture in Kajokeji County. These seeds will help tackle hunger, not only here but across South Sudan and Central Equatoria State,” Sokiri said, urging continued assistance in the next planting season.

The donation underscores the ongoing efforts to strengthen food security and empower local farmers as they rebuild their livelihoods.

However, persistent insecurity remains the biggest challenge in the realization of the initiative intended goal. The county in recent days has been a violent epicenter in the state. Now, FAO’s effort is a wake-up call to the government to guarantee farmers’ safety as the planting season begins.
