In the heart of South Sudan, where the scars of conflict still linger, a new dawn emerged, one that did not carry weapons but instead carried the promise of unity, strength, and resilience – The United by Sport project.
The initiative, designed to break barriers, foster inclusion, and heal divided communities through the power of athletics, was launched Tuesday in Juba.
“Our vision is to enhance inter-communal solidarity and peaceful coexistence,” Achulube John, Program Manager for Light for the World said. “Sport can connect people, encourage mutual respect, and provide shared experiences that unite individuals regardless of their differences.”
Emmanuel Lubari, Director for Disability Inclusion, emphasized the need for inclusion in sports pointed out that, “This is not just about physical activity. It’s about breaking barriers. When we play together, we break chains of exclusion. When we walk together, we replace hatred with peace.”
By 2028, United by Sport aimed to foster safe spaces where athletes of all abilities could compete side by side, where coaches would be trained to promote inclusivity, and where women and girls, often marginalized, would find empowerment through sport.
John’s message of hope said, “Let us play together as one team. Let us build friendships and live together as we act for peace, one step at a time,” was a wake-up call for ensuring inclusivity in a deeply polarized society based on ability.
The applause that followed was more than just for the speeches, it was for a future where sport became more than a game, but a force of unity, healing, and inclusion.
