Ex-Vice President Igga to receive peace award for honoring power shifts

James Wani Igga, former Vice President and First Deputy Chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), is set to receive the Ambassador of Peace Award from the Community Empowerment for Progressive Organization (CEPO) in recognition of his exemplary integrity and leadership in embracing a smooth transition of power.

His acceptance of governmental changes as a natural part of leadership underscores the principle that no one holds power indefinitely.

“We should welcome shifts in leadership with honor and peace. Therefore, CEPO will extend a certificate of appreciation along with the Ambassador of Peace Award to Dr. James Wani Igga for his commendable gesture,” said Edmund Yakani, CEPO Executive Director.

Yakani emphasized the importance of leaders recognizing that no position is permanent and that transitions should always be handled peacefully and with dignity.

“Leadership is temporary. Leaders come and go, but their departure and arrival must always be in a peaceful and honorable manner,” he added. “We hope this spirit of acceptance will continue among South Sudanese leaders, whether in government, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, or faith-based institutions.”

Despite his recent removal as Vice President for the Economic Cluster and First Deputy Chairperson of the ruling SPLM party, Dr. Igga did not react with resistance, setting himself apart from others who have struggled with political transitions.

The civil society leader urged others to emulate Igga’s statesmanship, particularly during periods of political change.

Igga’s acceptance of the transition serves as a model for peaceful leadership shifts in South Sudan, earning him well-deserved recognition for fostering stability amid political transformations.
