The Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Assembly has remained inactive, with its sessions suspended for about three months since March 2025.
However, lawmakers had anticipated that the assembly would resume on June 1, 2025, with a primary focus on the fiscal year budget preparation ahead of the next financial year comes July 1, 2025.
The Education Policy, among other priorities, was also on top list of the agenda for discussions, according to Assembly Spokesperson Garang Kuol Mabior.
Speaking to Standard Zone News, Mabior stated that executives have demonstrated an unwillingness, despite being formally notified, to determine an exact date for the reopening.
“Yesterday, we sent a letter to the Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Simon Ober Mawut, requesting the reopening of the assembly and asking for a specific date,” Kuol explained.
He further noted that legislators would await a response from the governor’s office regarding their request.
“We will see what date works best for them. The assembly’s reopening requires coordination with relevant stakeholders, who must be present to hear the governor’s address,” he added.
One of the key expectations, Kuol mentioned, is the restructuring of the assembly’s leadership, including the appointment of new chairpersons for specialized standing committees.
“The entire leadership of the assembly will change, and all parties to the revitalized peace agreement, SPLM-IG, SPLM-IO, OPP, and SSOA, will nominate candidates for the chairperson positions,” he stated.
