Community tensions prompt Nyamini land demarcation suspension

The Government of Central Equatoria State has suspended all land demarcation activities in Nyamini City, weeks after launching the demarcation and distribution of plots for both residential and commercial purposes.

The suspension comes amid rising tensions among local communities over land allocation, forcing authorities to intervene.

“In Nyamini, we have about five communities, and there are disputes within the land demarcation. It is almost leading to fights among themselves. But good enough, the security committee realized the tension and rushed to the scene,” Leon Abe Brown the Central Equatoria State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement said Tuesday.

The directive also affects Mangala Administrative Payam, another area impacted by the halt.

Leon emphasized that all activities related to land demarcation, including clearing green roads, have been halted following the Security Resolution Number 15, issued by the Governor of Central Equatoria State.

“This is the resolution of the Governor, suspending all community development committees. We have informed the communities not to carry out any demarcation without authorization from the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure or the Commissioner’s Office,” Leon stated.

Last month, the Community of Nyamini and Lodimi of Juba County, Ladu Payam, initiated the allotment and sale of plots to South Sudanese. Nyamini, Alemin Sebit Tombe, Chairman of Ilikare for Development Association, had said the area would be opened to all South Sudanese for residential and investment purposes.

Despite initial enthusiasm from citizens in Juba, the allotment process faced a setback when, a week into the exercise, the Commissioner of Juba County issued Local Order No. 2/2025, suspending all demarcation activities, including showing plots, allotment, and road opening, in Nyamini City until further notice.
