More than 1,000 cattle were reportedly stolen in a deadly midnight raid on Pan-Lou village, with three cattle owners killed and six others injured in South Sudan’s Ruweng Administrative Area, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Acting Information Minister Monylang Minyiel, the attack was carried out by armed militia believed to have crossed from neighboring Unity State.
He said some of the stolen cattle have since been recovered, and claiming that eight of the attackers were identified as members of Division 4, a country’s military division based in Unity State.
“It was a calculated attempt to destabilize the Ruweng Administrative Area,” said Minyiel, calling on Unity State officials to identify and hold the perpetrators accountable.
Minyiel condemned the incident and urged national and state authorities to intervene and prevent further bloodshed between communities.
This latest incident highlights the fragile state of intercommunal relations in South Sudan, particularly between Ruweng and Unity State, where past cattle-related tensions have led to violence.
