MTN unveils digital lifeline for displaced communities

MTN South Sudan has unveiled a fully equipped Tech Hub at Mangateen Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Juba, bringing vital digital access to one of the country’s most underserved communities.

The initiative marked the conclusion of the company’s annual #21DaysOfY’elloCare campaign, themed “Empowering Communities Through Digital Solutions.”

The solar-powered hub features desktop computers and high-speed internet, creating opportunities for education, communication, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, MTN donated 50 smartphones to selected heads of households, enhancing connectivity and access to digital platforms.

“Connectivity is not a luxury, it’s a lifeline,” said MTN South Sudan CEO Mapula Bodibe during the launch. “This hub will enable displaced communities to learn, grow, and engage with the wider world.”

The launch event drew high-level government officials, including Deputy Minister of ICT Hon. Gen. David Yau Yau and ICT Undersecretary Hon. Mawien Bulabek, who praised MTN for investing in digital inclusion at the grassroots level.

The project supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals—especially those related to education, innovation, and reduced inequalities. By targeting IDP communities, MTN demonstrates the private sector’s potential to restore dignity and rebuild lives through technology.

The #21DaysOfY’elloCare campaign is a pan-African MTN initiative that mobilizes staff to lead high-impact community projects, focusing on digital literacy and youth empowerment. This year’s effort underscores MTN’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering resilience in humanitarian settings.
