Authorities in the Abyei Special Administrative Area have established Cholera Treatment Units (CTUs) in every locality following the declaration of a cholera outbreak in the region.
Dr. Ayom Korchek, the area’s Minister of Health, confirmed the development after assessing the situation in affected communities, particularly the Amiet Market, where three deaths have already been recorded.
“Each CTU is equipped with essential supplies including intravenous fluids, Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), and antibiotics to manage and contain the spread of the disease,” the Abyei Press Unit said in a statement.
The outbreak was officially declared earlier this month after two confirmed cases in the Amiet area. Dr. Ayom’s visit to the site revealed serious environmental hazards, particularly the flooding of sewage and accumulation of solid waste in the western part of the market, which have exacerbated the spread of the disease.
“Contaminated water sources in and around Amiet are directly linked to the surge in cholera cases. Without swift intervention, the situation could worsen,” warned Dr. Ayom.
To mitigate further spread, health authorities have also introduced measures restricting the transportation of deceased individuals to Abyei. Additionally, the Ministry is launching a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate communities on prevention strategies and the dangers of using contaminated water.
“These community outreach efforts are vital to empowering residents with knowledge to protect themselves and their families,” the minister emphasized.
