The Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Emmanuel Parimo Okello, has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to peace, security, and development, urging citizens to unite and take active roles in overcoming the region’s mounting economic challenges.
Speaking to masses gathered in Wau during South Sudan’s 14th Independence Day celebration, Governor Okello called on the people to reflect on the sacrifices made for the country’s freedom and use the moment to commit themselves to building a stronger, more resilient society.
“We are committed to implementing peace, maintaining security, and ensuring development across Western Bahr el Ghazal,” Governor Okello declared. “As we celebrate our independence, we must remember the heroes and heroines who gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy today.”
His remarks come at a time when communities across the state are grappling with rising food insecurity and inflation, largely driven by climate change, conflict, and poor infrastructure.
Deputy Governor Zachariah Joseph Garang echoed similar concerns and called on citizens to embrace agriculture as a sustainable solution to the growing food crisis.
“The government cannot tackle the economic crisis alone,” Garang said. “This is the time for citizens to engage in agriculture and take ownership of their future. No one from another country will come to solve our problems. We must rely on ourselves.”
He further emphasized the urgency of collective action: “This is the right time for us to stand together and fight starvation in the state.”
Western Bahr el Ghazal, like many parts of South Sudan, continues to face complex humanitarian challenges. However, the leadership hopes that the spirit of independence can inspire communities to unite, act, and work toward lasting peace and self-sufficiency.
