Bishops raise alarm over ceasefire breaches in South Sudan

The Catholic Bishops Conference has voiced grave concern over the continued violation of the permanent ceasefire by South Sudan’s peace partners.

In a press statement delivered on Friday at the CRS compound in Juba, His Eminence Stephen Cardinal Ameyu Mulla, speaking on behalf of the bishops, described the security situation in the country as “volatile” and deeply worrying.

Cardinal Ameyu said the Church has received credible reports of aerial bombardments targeting civilian areas, acts that he said endanger lives and undermine peace efforts.

“We appeal to all political actors to take responsibility and work for lasting peace,” Cardinal Ameyu stressed, adding that the people of South Sudan have suffered for far too long.

The bishops called for immediate and unhindered humanitarian access to all areas affected by conflict and urged South Sudan’s leaders to reflect on the late Pope Francis’s powerful message of reconciliation during his visit to Juba.
