In a joint operation targeting gangs in Juba, police have arrested at least 12 suspected criminals, including an active soldier in the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF).
The raid in Gumbo Shirikat residential area uncovered an accumulation of criminal tools, including a pistol, master keys used for breaking into properties, and crude weapons like pangas, according to Police Spokesperson Major General James Monday Enoka.
“We managed to arrest 12 suspects, and these suspects were found in possession of a pistol and white weapons, which include pangas, and the keys of different types used for breaking and opening shops,” he told the state-owned SSBC, Wednesday evening.
The gang is accused of terrorizing residents and breaking into businesses already struggling with severe economic hardship.
The Police Spokesperson described the group as mobile and violent, responsible for carrying out crimes across the city and beyond.
“This group has been causing havoc in the area of Gumbo, Shirikat, moving between Shirikat and Bor, Jonglei state, committing violence, looting properties, and other crimes.”
This latest arrest is part of a broader, intensified effort by joint security operatives to set free Juba’s streets from criminal elements.
Maj. Gen. Enoka stated that community cooperation has been fundamental in leading to the mass arrests and urged the public to continue providing information to authorities.
“I take this opportunity to thank all the forces that have been doing a good job, and I also thank the public for the good cooperation they have accorded these forces, which has enabled them to succeed,” he stated.
According to officials, majority of the suspects are young people.
Many residential areas in Juba, including Gumbo and Shirikat, have long suffered from rising criminal acts, including looting, rape and killings.
This high-profile bust now, offers hope for a return to safety for the residents.
All 12 suspects are now under investigation and will face legal proceedings, police said.
