South Sudan celebrated World Boxing Day on Wednesday with a special focus on honoring the nation’s boxing heritage and spotlighting rising talent in the sport.
The event also marked the 8th anniversary of the South Sudan Boxing Federation.
Held in the capital, Juba, the celebration brought together veteran South Sudanese boxers who once represented Sudan in international arenas, including the Olympic Games, African championships, and Arab tournaments.
Their presence paid tribute to the pioneers who laid the foundation for boxing in the young nation.
The event was attended by the Federation President, Ms. Tereza Athian, alongside current champions and emerging boxers regarded as the future of South Sudanese boxing.
Their participation underscored a growing national commitment to developing the sport and nurturing young talent across the country.
Speakers at the event emphasized that the celebration was more than ceremonial.
It was an opportunity to inspire young people to embrace discipline, sportsmanship, and excellence, while preparing a new generation capable of competing at regional and international levels.
Officials highlighted that initiatives like this not only honor past achievements but also encourage youth participation, promote national pride, and help position South Sudan on the global sporting stage.
