Two young South Sudanese basketballers stabbed to death in Australia

Cobblebank has been shaken by the brutal killing of two young South Sudanese-Australian boys, aged just 12 and 15, who were stabbed to death in an ambush late Friday night.

According to Telegraph, the boys were walking home from a basketball game when they were set upon by a gang of youths armed with knives and machetes. Witnesses say the pair were chased down before being attacked in the street. Despite frantic efforts by emergency crews, both died at the scene.

Police have launched a homicide investigation and are appealing for information from the public. Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage and believe several attackers may still be at large.

“This was a cold-blooded and senseless act of violence against two children who had their whole lives ahead of them,” said Detective Inspector Sarah Collins. “We are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”

The killings have sent shockwaves through Melbourne’s South Sudanese-Australian community, which has been left grieving and fearful. Community elders and church leaders gathered on Saturday to comfort the boys’ families, while youth leaders urged against retaliation.

“We have lost two bright young boys to this madness,” said Pastor John Malek, a prominent community leader. “The pain is unbearable. Our hearts are broken, but we must stand together for peace and justice.”

Friends and classmates described the boys as talented and full of potential, with one dreaming of becoming a professional basketball player. “They were always smiling, always helping others,” said a family friend. “It’s hard to believe they are gone.”

Local councillors condemned the killings and renewed calls for stronger action on youth violence, including more investment in community outreach, sports programs, and mentoring. “We cannot allow knives to continue destroying young lives,” said Councillor James Morton.

By Saturday evening, dozens of mourners had gathered at the scene, leaving flowers, candles, and handwritten notes. A candlelight vigil is being planned for early next week.

Police remain on high alert in the area as investigations continue.
