Greater Pibor declares emergency as floods devastate communities

The Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) has declared a state of emergency after weeks of torrential rains unleashed severe flooding that has displaced thousands of people and destroyed key infrastructure.

In an official statement on Wednesday, David Ngiro Yangkon, Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), described the situation as catastrophic, saying communities are facing an alarming humanitarian crisis.

“Thousands of families are homeless, farmlands are under water, and food reserves have been lost. We are appealing for urgent humanitarian support,” Ngiro said.

Authorities reported that vital roads, bridges, schools, and health facilities have been cut off or damaged, leaving entire communities stranded without access to basic services.

The worst-affected areas include Gumuruk, Lekuangole, Pibor, Pochalla North, Pochalla South, and Verteth counties, though officials stressed that the flooding is widespread across GPAA.

The declaration highlights urgent needs for shelter, food, clean water, and medical supplies. The risk of water-borne diseases is also rising rapidly as stagnant floodwaters spread.

The GPAA government has called on both national authorities and international humanitarian partners to launch a rapid, multi-sectoral response to save lives.

“We are committed to working with partners to mitigate the impact of this disaster and support our communities,” Ngiro said.

Officials pledged to continue monitoring the crisis and provide regular updates as the humanitarian response unfolds.
