The African Union has used the International Day of Democracy to renew its call on Member States to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law, and embrace good governance as foundations for peace and sustainable development on the continent.

In a statement issued in Addis Ababa, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reminded governments of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, describing it as the guiding framework for promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen participation.

He urged African leaders to “redouble their efforts” in advancing democratic reforms and consolidating inclusive governance, stressing that democracy remains vital for stability, prosperity, and the integration of Africa.

The AU chief reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to stand by its Member States and peoples in achieving their aspirations for democracy and good governance, pledging continued support to strengthen institutions and foster political accountability across the continent.

The International Day of Democracy is observed each year on 15 September, following its proclamation by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007.

The day provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy worldwide, highlight the importance of citizen participation, and promote the principles of freedom, human rights, and the rule of law.

For Africa, the commemoration is especially significant, as many countries continue to strengthen democratic institutions and governance systems in the face of political transitions, security challenges, and demands for greater accountability from citizens.
