US Embassy condemns alleged SSPDF looting humanitarian supplies in Fangak

The United States Embassy in South Sudan has strongly condemned the looting of humanitarian supplies destined for vulnerable populations in Fangak County, Jonglei State, by alleged South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) troops.

In a statement, the Embassy denounced what it described as a troubling pattern of predation targeting those providing life-saving assistance to civilians in need.

“On September 7, SSPDF personnel reportedly raided a boat carrying World Food Programme (WFP) commodities in New Fangak, stealing food and supplies meant for populations facing severe food insecurity.”

It added that “Although the stolen goods were replaced on September 20, the incident reflects growing risks and challenges for humanitarian operations in conflict-affected areas.”

The Embassy expressed alarm that individuals entrusted with the country’s security would perpetrate such acts, urging South Sudanese leaders at all levels to prevent future looting and partner with international donors to support relief efforts.

It called on the transitional government to ensure safe humanitarian access, reduce operational risks, and prioritize the use of public funds for essential services, including aid delivery, public salaries, and security.

The mission also highlighted concerns over restricted access to Upper Nile State, where conflict and bureaucratic barriers threaten to worsen famine risks, stressing the urgent need for government cooperation to reach affected communities.

SSPDF has not yet issued any statement responding to the accusations.
