President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reinstated Gen. Paul Nang Majok as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), urging the top military leadership to uphold discipline, professionalism in the service of the nation.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony held on Thursday at the State House in Juba, President Kiir issued a directive emphasizing that the army must remain a neutral and professional institution.

“The army should stay out of politics. Your responsibility is to defend the sovereignty of this country and protect its people,” Kiir said, according to a statement from his office.

The President further encouraged Gen. Nang to prioritize the welfare and morale of all organized forces, stressing that their well-being remains central to national stability and peacebuilding.

“Leadership is not only about command but also care,” Kiir added.

“You must ensure that our soldiers are well-motivated and disciplined as we continue to reform and modernize our defense sector.”

The reappointment of Gen. Paul Nang Majok marks his second term as CDF, following his previous service between December 2024 and July 2025.

His return comes a day after Kiir relieved Gen. Dau Aturjong, who has now been appointed as Technical Advisor in the Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

In his remarks, Kiir pledged unwavering support to initiatives that strengthen discipline and accountability within the army, reaffirming his government’s commitment to keeping the military apolitical and focused on its constitutional duties.

As Gen. Nang resumes his role at the helm of the SSPDF, expectations are high that his leadership will reinforce unity, professionalism, and discipline — key pillars for maintaining peace and stability in the world’s youngest nation.
