South Sudan mourns legendary journalist Michael Koma

South Sudan’s media fraternity is mourning the death of veteran journalist Michael Koma, who passed away after a short illness. Koma, known for his fearless reporting and commitment to truth, served as editor for several leading newspapers, including Juba Monitor, The Witness, and The Dawn.

The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) described his passing as a “great loss” to the profession and the nation.

“Michael will be remembered for his courage and dedication to journalism,” said UJOSS Chairperson Oyet Patrick, noting that Koma’s contribution to ethical reporting inspired many young journalists.

Eye Radio’s Managing Editor, Koang Pal Chang, also paid tribute, calling him “one of the best editors of our time.”

“We will remember his dedication while serving as news editor for publications like the Juba Monitor and The Dawn.

His commitment to media leadership was evident through his long service as a member of the National Editors Forum since 2014,” Pal Chang said, extending condolences to Koma’s family and colleagues.

Koma’s passing comes as South Sudan continues to witness a generational shift in the newsroom, with senior editors and reporters who helped shape the country’s post-independence media landscape gradually departing.
