Over 24,000 affected as flash floods devastate Leer county

More than 24,000 people in Leer County have been affected by flash floods and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, local officials said.

According to James Dor Mathiang, the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) Coordinator for Leer, heavy rains and rising Nile water levels have submerged eight of the county’s 16 payams, forcing families to flee to higher ground.

“The flood situation worsened after five consecutive days of rain,” Mathiang told reporters, adding that many of the displaced people are now living without adequate food, medicine, or shelter.

He warned of a looming health crisis as stagnant floodwaters increase the risk of waterborne diseases.

Local authorities have appealed for immediate support from humanitarian agencies to provide essential relief items, including food, clean water, and temporary shelters for the affected families.
