The Undersecretary in the Ministry of Information, Communication, Telecommunication and Postal Services, Mawien Bulabek, has urged journalists to uphold ethics, accuracy, and professionalism as South Sudan heads toward its first general elections.
He made the remarks on Thursday during the opening of a two-day training on Conflict and Gender-Sensitive Reporting and Fact-Checking in Juba, organized by Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) in partnership with the Media Monitors Network (MMN) and supported by the Government of Canada.
“We appreciate this important initiative that brings journalists together to reflect on their role in promoting peace and unity. Responsible reporting is essential for national stability, especially during this critical time,” Mawien said.
Running from November 6th to 7th, 2025, the workshop is held under the theme “Ethical Journalism for an Inclusive Society.”
It brings together journalists, editors, content creators, and government officials to strengthen their capacity in responsible, conflict-sensitive, and gender-balanced reporting.
JHR Project Manager Mary Ajith urged participants to embrace peace journalism and verify information before publication to avoid spreading misinformation or hate speech.
“As we approach crucial national processes, it is important that journalists maintain professionalism and accuracy. Peace journalism plays a key role in shaping dialogue and building trust among communities,” Ajith noted.
She emphasized that ethical reporting ensures the media remains a platform for truth, accountability, and inclusion rather than division and misinformation.
Marina Modi, Chairperson of MMN, said the training aims to promote inclusive storytelling that is sensitive to all groups in society.
“This training reminds us that journalism must be inclusive and sensitive to all. Ethical storytelling promotes positive change and prevents harm,” Modi said.
The program also seeks to foster collaboration between journalists and civil society to strengthen fact-checking, combat bias, and support peacebuilding through accurate and balanced reporting in South Sudan.
