Aweil’s rising star Cicilia Aget Talang lit up the track on Saturday with a commanding and confident performance, storming to victory in the women’s 5000m at the ongoing National Athletics Championship in Juba.
Running with the composure of a seasoned champion, Talang broke away early from the pack, maintaining a punishing pace that none of her competitors could match.
Cheered on by an energized crowd, Talang sealed her win with a remarkable finishing time of 17:24:65, further cementing her status as one of South Sudan’s most promising long-distance prospects.
Her aggressive pacing strategy, combined with her trademark late-race acceleration, left spectators in awe and fellow athletes inspired.
Behind her, Wau’s teenage sensation Safa Martin delivered one of the standout performances of the championship, overcoming fatigue and stiff competition to secure silver.
The young runner crossed the line in 19:42:47, earning praise for her resilience, tactical patience, and emotional maturity on a national stage many expected to overwhelm her.
In third place, Central Equatoria’s Margret Nyandit claimed the bronze, holding off a late challenge in the final laps to secure a well-deserved podium finish.
In the men’s 5000m, Juba’s contingent enjoyed a strong showing. Juma Abiel claimed second place with a time of 33:49:17, demonstrating steady pacing and a powerful closing lap.
His teammate Minyiel followed closely behind, finishing in 34:08:15, earning Juba valuable points and reinforcing the city’s long-distance depth.
The day’s biggest statement, however, came in the men’s 10km, where Dominic Oyiro delivered a masterclass in endurance and race management.
Pulling away in the second half of the race, Oyiro crossed the line in a winning time of 32:23:36, securing one of the most decisive victories of the meet.
David Taban also put in a commendable performance to finish third, adding to the competitive spirit and intensity of the long-distance events.
The National Athletics Championship continues on Sunday, with athletes from across South Sudan vying for national titles, personal bests, regional pride, and a chance to qualify for future international competitions.
With rising stars like Talang, Oyiro, and Martin making their mark, South Sudan’s athletics scene continues to show depth, promise, and growing national excitement.
