Yeni Costa vows to restore confidence as he assumes Central Bank leadership

The newly appointed Governor of the Bank of South Sudan (BoSS), Yeni Samuel Costa, officially took charge on Monday, telling staff at the bank’s headquarters in Juba that he had returned “to settle an issue,” a declaration that drew applause and cheers from employees.

Yeni, a veteran banker with 38 years of service, replaces Dr. Addis Ababa Othow as the head of the Central Bank. In his remarks, he pledged strict adherence to financial regulations and emphasized that he would not steer the institution alone.

“We must work together. I respect the regulations and the laws,” he said, promising a collaborative approach as he begins his tenure.

The governor struck a firm tone, vowing to uncover where the South Sudanese Pound has been hoarded and to restore public confidence in the national currency.

He outlined plans to strengthen monetary stability and promote digital payment systems, citing global examples such as the United States, where digital transactions have been optimized.

Yeni warned staff against political involvement, stressing that the bank is a professional institution bound by rules and standards. “If you bring politics here, we will show you the door to where politics is,” he cautioned.

He pledged cooperation with staff but made clear that violations of regulations would be met with penalties.

The governor also underscored the importance of justice and equal treatment in the workplace, describing staff as the bank’s most valuable asset. To loud applause, he announced a two-month incentive for all BoSS employees.

First Deputy Governor Samuel Yanga Mikaya thanked President Salva Kiir Mayardit for appointing Hon. Yeni, noting that the new governor had only been on leave and was now returning to continue his service.

He briefed the governor on current institutional challenges, including liquidity shortages that have disrupted the digital payment system.

Representing the governor’s family, Antonieta Benjamin expressed gratitude to President Kiir for the appointment and thanked the staff of the Central Bank.

Speaking on behalf of the people of Raga and the community leadership, she urged cooperation between the staff and the new governor.

The ceremony was attended by members of the BoSS board, senior officials, and family representatives.
