President Salva Kiir Mayardit has conveyed deep regret over the fire that devastated Nyakuron/Custom Market on Monday evening, assuring full government support to traders affected by the tragedy.
The inferno, which started around 6:00 PM on 1 December 2025, destroyed dozens of shops and goods worth millions, dealing a severe blow to families who relied on the market for their income.
In an official statement issued from Juba, the President described the incident as a “painful blow” to hardworking business owners whose livelihoods vanished in a single night.
He said the Nyakuron/Custom area remains a vital economic hub in the capital, and its disruption poses significant implications for the entire country’s economy.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of South Sudan, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to all the traders, shop owners, and families affected by this disaster,” President Kiir said. “We share in your grief and stand with you during this difficult time.”
The President assured citizens that the Government will move swiftly to uncover the cause of the fire and ensure similar incidents are prevented in the future.
He issued immediate directives to relevant agencies to launch a thorough investigation, support affected traders, and strengthen fire safety measures across Juba and other urban centers.
Kiir emphasized that traders should not feel abandoned in the wake of the catastrophe.
He pledged that the Government is committed to exploring all possible avenues to help them rebuild and return to their businesses.
“We will do everything within our power to help them recover,” he stated, noting that the resilience of the business community remains critical to South Sudan’s economic stability.
Authorities have already begun preliminary assessments to determine the scale of damage and identify support mechanisms for victims.
The cause of the fire remains unknown; many traders have called for urgent reforms and improved safety infrastructure in congested markets across Juba.
As investigations begin, the President urged citizens to remain calm and united, expressing hope that recovery efforts will soon restore the market’s operations.
“May God grant strength and patience to all those who have suffered this terrible loss,” he concluded.
