South Sudan’s energy minister promises improved electricity supply, full coverage of Juba

The Minister of Energy and Dams, Agok Makur Kur Agok, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving electricity supply and achieving full power coverage across Juba.

The minister made the remarks on Thursday during an official visit to the facilities of Ezra Group of Companies, Juba’s main electricity supplier.

Accompanied by a technical team from the Directorate of Engineering and Grid Operation, the delegation toured key installations.

According to Agok, the visit was part of the ministry’s short-term plan to assess the operational capacity of existing power infrastructure in Juba and other parts of the country.

He said the inspections will guide immediate interventions to strengthen electricity generation, distribution, and the integration of renewable energy.

“As a new minister, I have a short plan and a long plan,” Agok said. “The short plan is to visit power facilities in Juba and other areas of South Sudan to understand the situation on the ground. The long plan is to expand generation and ensure reliable electricity for our people.”

The minister disclosed that Juba is currently utilizing about 79 megawatts of electricity, with an additional 21 megawatts yet to be brought online.

He said Ezra Group has assured the ministry that the remaining capacity will be completed and operational within the coming months, further boosting power supply in the capital.

Agok also announced plans to open and operationalize additional power plants in the coming months, noting that the government’s objective is to ensure that all parts of Juba are connected to electricity.

He emphasized that reliable power is essential not only for lighting and economic activity, but also for public safety and security.

On electricity tariffs, the minister said the government has already issued directives on price regulation and tariff reduction, adding that implementation is ongoing despite public concerns.

He urged residents to be patient as technical and operational adjustments continue.

The minister further highlighted ongoing cooperation with neighboring Uganda on cross-border electricity transmission, stating that power lines already reaching Nimule are expected to be extended to Juba and other parts of the country.

He said the ministry is working closely with Ugandan authorities to accelerate the process as part of a longer-term regional energy strategy.

Representatives of Ezra Group of Companies briefed the delegation on their corporate social responsibility initiatives, noting that the company has supported host communities by constructing clinics and schools and providing agricultural tractors to surrounding communities.

The visit, officials said, reflects the ministry’s renewed focus on practical engagement with power providers and technical experts as it seeks to address long-standing electricity challenges and improve access to reliable, affordable energy for citizens in Juba and beyond.
