SSPDF orders UNMISS, NGOs, civilians out of Akobo within 72 hours

The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) has ordered UNMISS personnel, humanitarian organizations, and civilians in Akobo to vacate the town and surrounding areas within 72 hours, following the next phase of military operations in the region.

According to a press release issued by Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, the Director for Media & Press and SSPDF Spokesperson, the directive comes after the successful completion of the first phase of Operation Enduring Peace, with Akobo identified as the focus of the second phase of offensive operations.

The release stated that the withdrawal and evacuation are being mandated to avoid unnecessary collateral damage and ensure the safety of all personnel and residents in the area.

“All UN agencies, NGOs, and their staff are ordered to leave within the same 72-hour window of opportunity, and civilians are instructed to either relocate to the nearest SSPDF-controlled areas or move to locations they consider safer,” Maj. Gen. Koang said in the statement.

The SSPDF emphasized that the orders are issued in advance to give sufficient time for an orderly and safe evacuation, highlighting the military’s commitment to minimizing harm during operations.

Akobo town, located in Jonglei State, has previously been a strategic location in South Sudan’s ongoing security operations.

Maj. Gen. Koang urged UN personnel, humanitarian agencies, and residents to comply with the directive, noting that the SSPDF will provide assistance and guidance for safe relocation to minimize risk to civilians and staff.

The spokesperson also encouraged organizations and local leaders to coordinate with the SSPDF during the relocation process, emphasizing that compliance is crucial to prevent unnecessary casualties and disruptions in humanitarian services.
