Ex-speaker thanks Kiir after dramatic exit

Former Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), Jemma Nunu Kumba, has expressed gratitude to President Salva Kiir Mayardit following her dramatic removal from office earlier this week.

In an appreciation letter dated April 8, Nunu thanked the president for the “trust and confidence” placed in her during her tenure as the first female Speaker of the TNLA, a position she held from August 2021 until April 6, 2026.

Her departure marks the end of a significant chapter in South Sudan’s transitional governance.

Describing her time in office as a “profound honour,” Nunu said she had served during a critical period in the country’s history, as it continues to navigate the fragile path toward peace, stability, and nation-building under the framework of the revitalised agreement.

She highlighted efforts made under her leadership to strengthen the legislature, noting improvements not only in the physical state of parliament but also in its functionality and adherence to regional standards.

Nunu credited fellow lawmakers, parliamentary staff, and administrators for supporting reforms aimed at enhancing accountability and upholding the dignity of the House.

The former Speaker also pointed to her broader public service experience including her role as South Sudan’s first female governor as instrumental in shaping her leadership approach at the national assembly and in representing the country regionally and internationally.

Despite her removal, Nunu struck a conciliatory tone, reaffirming her commitment to national unity and continued service. She pledged to remain active as a Member of Parliament, stressing that nation-building is a collective responsibility that extends beyond individual positions.

“I remain fully committed and loyal to my party, the government, and the people of South Sudan,” she said, adding that unity and dedication to national interests would be key to moving the country forward.

Her exit comes amid heightened political tensions within the transitional government, although officials have yet to publicly detail the full circumstances surrounding her removal.

Nunu concluded her letter by reaffirming her respect and continued support for President Kiir’s leadership, expressing readiness to serve the nation in any capacity.
