South Sudan’s newly appointed parliamentary leadership has pledged to restore discipline, transparency, and efficiency within the legislature following a high-level meeting with President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
The commitment came after Speaker Rt. Hon. Joseph Ngere Paciko, Deputy Speaker Hon. Abuk Payiti Ayik, and SPLM Chief Whip Hon. Tulio Odongi Ayahu paid a courtesy call on the president on Friday.
During the meeting, Kiir congratulated the new leadership of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) and urged them to lead with integrity and discipline as they take on the responsibility of steering the country’s legislative agenda at a critical time in the transition.
The president expressed confidence in the team’s ability to provide stable and effective leadership, emphasizing the need for lawmakers to prioritize national interests and strengthen public trust in state institutions.
In response, Speaker Ngere assured the president that the new leadership is committed to reforming the parliamentary system by enforcing discipline among lawmakers and improving institutional performance.
He said the TNLA would work to ensure greater accountability, transparency, and efficiency in its operations.
“We are determined to uphold discipline, ensure efficiency, and promote transparency and accountability in parliament,” Ngere said, adding that the legislative agenda would be aligned with the broader national priorities of peace, stability, and development.
Observers say the pledges come at a time when public expectations are high for meaningful reforms within parliament, which plays a central role in overseeing government actions and passing key legislation ahead of the planned 2026 elections.
The renewed focus on reform is also seen as critical to advancing the country’s fragile transition, including the implementation of outstanding provisions of the peace agreement and preparations for a democratic vote.
As the new leadership settles into office, attention will turn to whether the promised reforms will translate into tangible improvements in legislative performance and governance in South Sudan.
