Hundreds of residents are expected to take part in the upcoming 5km Race for Peace and Development in Juba, an event aimed at promoting unity, healthy living and youth empowerment through sport.
The race, scheduled for 12 July 2026, was officially launched by the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture in partnership with Imagine Academy and the Israeli Embassy in South Sudan.
Organisers say the event will bring together students, athletes, government officials, development partners and members of the public in a collective effort to promote peaceful coexistence and social cohesion.
The race will begin at 6:00 a.m. from Rainbow Playground in Munuki and follow a route along Bilpam Road to the Funeral Home junction before returning to the starting point.
Speaking during the launch, Central Equatoria State Minister for Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Bush Buse, called on residents to register and participate in the event.
He described sport as an important platform for strengthening peace, fostering unity and encouraging positive engagement among young people.
The minister announced that registration is now open at Bulluk Playground, where free training sessions will be conducted every Saturday in preparation for the race.
Organisers say the initiative is designed not only to encourage physical fitness but also to create opportunities for communities to come together in a spirit of friendship and reconciliation.
John William Ladu, President of the Juba Local Athletics Association, said the race will provide a platform for identifying and nurturing emerging athletic talent while advancing the message of peace.
He noted that participants from different backgrounds will have the opportunity to interact, exercise and contribute to efforts aimed at building stronger and more united communities.
According to organisers, the event is open to anyone who is physically fit and willing to participate, whether by running or walking the 5km course.
Imagine Academy coach Simon Piol emphasized that the race is about inclusion and participation rather than competition alone.
He said registration is free of charge and all participants will receive official race T-shirts.
Piol added that both South Sudanese citizens and foreign residents living in Juba are encouraged to join the event.
To ensure the safety of participants, organisers have arranged comprehensive security and medical support along the race route.
Police officers, other organized forces, Red Cross personnel and volunteers are expected to be deployed throughout the event to provide assistance and respond to emergencies if needed.
Participants will compete in 12 categories, with medals and awards set to be presented to winners.
Meanwhile, Imagine Academy Resource Mobilizer Esther Owino encouraged women and girls to take part in large numbers, saying the race offers an opportunity to increase female participation in athletics and inspire healthier lifestyles.
She noted that schools, youth groups and members of the private sector have already been invited to participate, with organisers anticipating a strong turnout.
The Race for Peace and Development is expected to be one of the largest community sporting events in Juba this year, highlighting the role of sport in promoting unity, social cohesion and lasting peace in South Sudan.
