Western Equatoria State politician and youth advocate Joseph Apai Arkangelo has been released from National Security Service (NSS) detention after spending 22 days in custody, bringing to an end a case that had drawn attention from supporters and political observers in the state.
Apai was arrested on 2 June and released on 24 June 2026. Preliminary information indicates that his detention was linked to articles he allegedly published concerning governance and administrative issues within the Western Equatoria State government.
His release comes just days after he was appointed Chairperson of the National Renaissance Party (NRP), an opposition political platform, on 20 June.
Following his release, Apai expressed gratitude to family members, friends, supporters and well-wishers who stood by him during what he described as a difficult period.
“Thanks be to God. Everything happens for a purpose, but keeping hope and addressing situations with patience often leads to meaningful resolutions,” he said in a statement.
He acknowledged the impact the detention had on his family, particularly his children and wife, while thanking those who offered support during his time in custody.
“Since my arrest on 02.06.2026 until my release today, 24.06.2026, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who stood with me and contributed positively during this difficult time. This experience had an impact on me, my children, my wife, my family, friends, and well-wishers,” he said.
Apai added that the matter had been resolved amicably and indicated that he would share his perspective on the events surrounding his detention at a later stage.
“Today, we settled everything amicably. I will share my voice and perspective in due course. For now, I have a lot to do as I take the next steps toward a new chapter in life and a new approach,” he stated.
Known among many young people in Western Equatoria and beyond, Apai has built a reputation as an outspoken advocate for good governance, accountability, peace and stability in South Sudan.
Through public commentary and civic engagement, he has frequently called for improved service delivery, responsible leadership and greater participation of young people in national affairs.
Over the years, he has also expressed interest in seeking public office through democratic processes, arguing that young leaders should actively contribute to shaping the country’s future.
Supporters view him as one of a growing number of youth politicians seeking to play a larger role in South Sudan’s political landscape, particularly as the country prepares for its anticipated elections in December 2026.
His appointment to lead the National Renaissance Party was seen by political observers as a significant step in his political career and could position him among emerging voices expected to participate in future electoral contests should the elections proceed as scheduled.
The circumstances surrounding his arrest and detention have not been fully detailed by authorities.
However, his release is likely to be welcomed by supporters who had called for due process and transparency regarding the case.
As South Sudan moves toward a crucial political transition period, Apai’s release returns him to a public arena where issues of governance, political participation and youth representation continue to dominate national discussions.
For now, the Western Equatoria politician says his focus is on moving forward, thanking those who stood with him and preparing for what he described as a new chapter in his personal and political journey.
