South Sudan opens new Juba Airport terminal

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has officially inaugurated the new Terminal Three at Juba International Airport, marking a major milestone in South Sudan’s efforts to modernize its aviation infrastructure and improve international air transport services.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Thursday in Juba, brought together senior government officials, diplomats, aviation stakeholders and development partners to witness the opening of what authorities described as a modern passenger terminal built to international standards.

Speaking during the event, President Kiir said the completion of Terminal Three demonstrates the government’s commitment to investing in strategic infrastructure that supports economic growth, enhances regional connectivity and improves the experience of travellers.

The new facility is expected to significantly increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity while easing congestion at the country’s busiest international gateway. It also introduces upgraded security systems, improved passenger processing areas and modern amenities designed to meet international aviation requirements.

The inauguration was held under the theme, “A New Era of Safe, Secure and Sustainable Air Transport for All,” reflecting the government’s ambition to strengthen South Sudan’s aviation sector and position Juba as a more competitive regional transport hub.

Officials said the project forms part of broader efforts to modernize the country’s transport infrastructure, facilitate trade, encourage investment and support tourism by providing safer and more efficient air travel services.

The terminal is expected to improve the overall travel experience for passengers through expanded check-in facilities, better baggage handling systems and enhanced immigration and customs services, while creating a more efficient working environment for airport operators and airlines.

Government officials also said the investment underscores South Sudan’s commitment to complying with international aviation standards and improving operational safety as air traffic continues to grow.

The opening of Terminal Three comes as South Sudan seeks to strengthen economic recovery through infrastructure development and improved regional integration.

Authorities believe the expanded airport capacity will facilitate business travel, attract new airline operators and increase opportunities for trade and investment.
