South Sudan Youth Union Launches Youth-Led Agricultural Initiative

In an effort to tackle food insecurity and promote youth empowerment, the South Sudan National Youth Union has launched a new agriculture-based initiative targeting young people across the country.

The project, aimed at youth aged 18 to 35, focuses on modern farming techniques to boost food production and improve rural livelihoods.

It was officially launched Friday under the theme “Youth Empowerment and Agricultural Competition.”

Speaking at the event, Karina Ajook, Secretary for Gender and Social Welfare at the Youth Union, outlined the project’s key objectives including recognizing youth as drivers of agricultural transformation, increasing productivity, promoting environmental sustainability, and improving access to markets for youth-led enterprises.

“This initiative will empower young people through training, expand their access to markets, and encourage sustainable agricultural practices,” said Ajook.

She also announced the formation of a Youth Employment and Welfare Survey Committee, which will assess job market trends and develop strategies to improve employment opportunities for young South Sudanese.

“The committee will gather data, identify barriers facing young jobseekers, monitor employment programs, and advocate for youth-friendly policies,” she added.

With over 70% of the population under 35, South Sudan’s youth face numerous challenges including high unemployment, limited education access, and few economic opportunities.

Mario Velvur Gunda, Director General for Youth at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, hailed the initiative and pledged the ministry’s support.

“Agriculture is key to solving food insecurity. We will work with development partners like WFP, FAO, and the Ministry of Agriculture to bring this vision to life,” Gunda said.

The Youth Union believes this initiative will serve as a stepping stone toward empowering the next generation and ensuring a food-secure future for South Sudan.
