Football, faith, and community spirit brought South Sudan together in an extraordinary peace initiative championed by RECONCILE International. What began as a sports tournament transcended into a profound expression of unity, culminating in a memorable finale at Yei Freedom Square on April 15, 2025.
The Inter-Community Peace Tournament attracted thousands of spectators, peacebuilders, and local leaders, serving as a key part of RECONCILE International’s broader campaign to promote healing, reconciliation, and social cohesion through grassroots initiatives.
Supported by Bread for the World, the event aimed to bridge divides and foster harmony among South Sudanese communities.
Earlier in the week, Rev. Peter Tibi, Executive Director of RECONCILE International, set the tone with a compelling address at a related event titled “For Peace.” His vision of Yei County as a model of harmony for South Sudan resonated deeply with attendees.
“Our vision is to make Yei County a model of peace for all of South Sudan,” Rev. Tibi expressed. “A place where all 64 tribes can live together in harmony, peacefully coexisting with the government and our partners.”
Since its founding in 2003, RECONCILE has dedicated itself to building peace, addressing trauma, and strengthening unity in the region. The Inter-Community Peace Tournament exemplified these values, showcasing how football can unite people and inspire collaboration.
The tournament’s climactic final match between Greater Bahr-el-Ghazal FC and Greater Western Equatoria FC was a thrilling showdown. The first half ended in a tense stalemate, thanks to the exceptional performances of goalkeepers Boy Robert and Sindani.
However, the second half ignited with action. Abraham Akol capitalized on a loose ball to put Greater Bahr-el-Ghazal FC ahead, followed by a decisive strike from Nelson Mandela, a player whose name itself symbolizes peace and perseverance.
Celebrations erupted across Freedom Square during the awards ceremony, where Hon. Commissioner Emmanuel Taban of Yei River County joined RECONCILE leaders to honor participants.
Greater Bahr-el-Ghazal FC was crowned champions, while Greater Western Equatoria FC secured the runner-up position. Individual accolades recognized Abraham Akol as the top scorer with two goals, Boy Robert as the best goalkeeper, Mr. Issa Abduh for managerial excellence, and Emmanuel Aligo for his disciplined conduct.
“I wish you peace forever,” Commissioner Taban declared as he emphasized the tournament’s impact on reconciliation and mutual understanding among communities.
The Inter-Community Peace Tournament demonstrated how football is more than just a sport – it is a bridge that connects people, heals divisions, and inspires hope. As twilight fell over Yei, Freedom Square echoed with a powerful message: “More games. More peace. More unity.”
South Sudan’s journey toward lasting peace continues, driven by the unifying spirit of its people and the transformative power of sport.
