Adil named 2026 cancer advocacy ambassador

Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony has been named the 2026 Cancer Advocacy Ambassador, in recognition of his commitment to advancing cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment in South Sudan.

The designation was announced following a meeting in Juba between Governor Adil and the South Sudan Cancer Association Network (SSCAN), led by its Chairperson, Dr. Albino Amum Awin, and held in collaboration with the Support for Effective Peace Organization (SEPO).

Speaking after the meeting, SEPO Executive Director Edmond Yegane described the discussions as fruitful, noting that they yielded concrete commitments aimed at strengthening cancer advocacy and care in the country.

According to Yegane, Governor Adil pledged to support the institutionalization of the South Sudan Cancer Network and to champion the establishment of a national cancer center focused on laboratory and clinical research to advance cancer prevention and treatment.

“He has agreed to act as an advocate and promote the importance of the South Sudan Cancer Network in society,” Yegane said, adding that the Governor also committed to supporting the Network with office space to enable it to operate effectively as an institution.

Governor Adil further accepted an invitation to participate in activities marking World Cancer Day, commemorated annually on February 4, which aims to raise awareness and encourage cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

The South Sudan Cancer Network announced that Governor Adil will be officially recognized and crowned as the Cancer Advocacy Ambassador for 2026 during World Cancer Day celebrations, a role expected to amplify national efforts to combat cancer and improve access to care.

Advocates expressed hope that the Governor’s commitment will inspire other state leaders to support cancer initiatives and strengthen locally developed healthcare infrastructure for cancer patients across South Sudan.
