Court adjourns Machar trial to next week to review parties’ objections

The special court hearing the high-profile case against South Sudan’s suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar has once again adjourned the proceedings.

The adjournment, now set for Monday, September 29, 2025, is intended to give the bench time to deliberate on objections raised by both sides.

Presiding Judge James Alala Deng announced the decision on Wednesday, saying the adjournment was necessary to “allow sufficient time to review and rule on the legal arguments presented by the parties.”

The prosecution raised concerns about the eligibility of two members of Machar’s defense team, alleging that their legal licenses had not been renewed.

According to the prosecution, this would render them ineligible to practice law under South Sudan’s legal framework.

“The matter is now before the court, and we must address these procedural questions before the trial can continue,” Judge Alala stated.

The high-stakes trial, which has drawn significant domestic and international attention, is part of ongoing proceedings against Machar over alleged actions linked to past political and security crises.

The next hearing is scheduled for Monday, September 29, when the court is expected to issue a ruling on the objections before resuming substantive proceedings.
