Gen. Nang gets Kiir’s re-blessing as new South Sudan army chief

President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the Commander-in-Chief of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), has reappointed Dr. Paul Nang Majok as the Chief of Defence Forces, calling on the army to remain apolitical and focused on defending the nation.

Speaking during the leadership handover ceremony at the Military Headquarters in Bilpham, President Kiir directed the new command to uphold discipline, serve with integrity, and advance the professional transformation of the national army.

Dr. Nang replaces Gen. Dau Aturjong Nyuol in a return to a familiar role, marking his second appointment as the country’s top military officer after a previous tenure that ended with his removal.

“The army must stay away from politics and concentrate on its constitutional duty — to defend the country, its people, and their properties,” Kiir said, emphasizing the need for loyalty and unity within the ranks.

He further instructed the SSPDF leadership to prioritize the welfare of soldiers and safeguard peace and security as South Sudan continues its transition toward stability and institutional reform.

Senior officials at the Eagle House described the change of command as part of ongoing efforts to build a professional, unified, and accountable defence force committed to national harmony.
