Fierce inter-clan fighting in Lakes State has left 15 people dead and more than 50 injured, local authorities confirmed.
Moses Maker Magok, Commissioner of Rumbek North County, said the violence erupted among clans in the Nielniel section of Pagut, Padiangbor, and Pamolnyin.
“During the clashes, one person was killed in the morning among Pan Ruop, and this is how the fighting started at around 11:00 AM,” he was quoted by local media.
“In the afternoon, youth from Pan Ruop assembled and launched an attack on the rival section, which increased casualties on both sides, resulting in 15 deaths and 52 injuries.”
Maker added that government forces have intervened and restored calm to the area.
Lakes State has historically been prone to inter-clan hostilities, but peace was largely maintained over the past four years under Governor Rin Teny.
However, as South Sudan’s broader crisis continues, sporadic violence has resurfaced in parts of the state, underscoring the fragility of the previously stable region.
The latest clashes serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in maintaining peace and security in South Sudan, even in areas that had been relatively calm.
