The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in South Sudan hosted a colorful reception in Juba on Friday evening to commemorate Uganda’s 63rd Independence Anniversary, marking six decades of freedom, resilience, and regional partnership.
Held at the Pyramid Continental Hotel, the event brought together senior government officials, diplomats, and representatives from regional and international organizations in a lively display of solidarity between Uganda and South Sudan.
Representing President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Dr. Kuyok Abol Kuyok, Undersecretary at the Ministry of General Education and Instruction, served as Guest of Honour at the celebration.
“On behalf of His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the Government, and the people of South Sudan, I wish His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Government, and the people of Uganda a happy 63rd Independence Anniversary,” Dr. Kuyok said in his keynote address.
He praised Uganda’s long-standing commitment to peace, stability, and development, describing President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership as “an inspiration that continues to strengthen our shared aspirations for unity and prosperity in East Africa.”
Dr. Kuyok reaffirmed the strong diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations, highlighting Uganda’s position as South Sudan’s largest trading partner and a steadfast ally in peacebuilding and education.
“As close neighbors and trading partners, South Sudan and Uganda have enjoyed strong economic relations,” he noted. “However, we acknowledge that the balance of trade currently favors Uganda — and it is now in South Sudan’s court to work toward balancing this equation.”
He emphasized that the friendship between the two countries extends beyond economics, rooted in deep cultural, social, and tribal ties.
“South Sudan believes in good neighborliness and upholds that it is our collective responsibility to maintain peace and coexistence for the prosperity of all,” he said.
In his welcoming remarks, Amb. Brig. Gen. Ronnie Balya, Uganda’s Ambassador to South Sudan, hailed the strong diplomatic bond and historical friendship that continue to define relations between Kampala and Juba.
“South Sudan’s participation in this celebration reflects genuine regional solidarity and mutual respect,” Ambassador Balya said, adding that Uganda remains committed to advancing cooperation in trade, education, and regional peace.
The evening featured traditional Ugandan performances, live music, and cultural displays celebrating the country’s journey since gaining independence from British colonial rule on October 9, 1962.
Dignitaries from various ministries, ambassadors, and senior United Nations officials joined in the festivities, which concluded with a toast to friendship and unity.
In closing, Dr. Kuyok conveyed President Kiir’s message of goodwill and reaffirmed South Sudan’s commitment to working alongside Uganda for regional stability and integration.
“On behalf of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, I reiterate his best wishes for a joyful and happy 63rd anniversary of your glorious Independence Day,” he said, drawing applause from the audience.
As the evening drew to a close, the atmosphere was filled with warmth and optimism — a celebration not only of Uganda’s independence but also of the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation that continue to unite the two East African neighbors.
