A landmark community-led peace initiative concluded in Yei Town on April 11, 2026, as the Kakuwa Community wrapped up a two-day “twin” peace mission with the signing of a comprehensive resolution aimed at strengthening unity, stability, and cooperation across the region.
The mission, held in Yei popularly known as “Small London” brought together youth, elders, community leaders, and representatives from neighboring areas in a concerted effort to address divisions and chart a collective path toward peace.
It combined two key components: a Youth for Peace Conference and the formal introduction of the Kakuwa Community’s executive leadership to grassroots members.
Organizers described the initiative as a strategic platform to empower young people as agents of peace while reinforcing trust between leadership structures and the wider community.
Throughout the conference, participants engaged in dialogue focused on reconciliation, coexistence, and practical steps to improve livelihoods amid ongoing socio-economic challenges.
A major highlight of the gathering was the strong participation from diverse communities across Yei River County, as well as neighboring Morobo and Lainya counties.
The inclusive nature of the event underscored a shared recognition that sustainable peace can only be achieved through collective action that transcends ethnic and administrative boundaries.
Deliberations culminated in the signing of a Peace Resolution and Communique by youth representatives, elders, and the Kakuwa Community leadership.
Witnessed by the chief guest, the document captured a unified commitment to non-violence, dialogue, and mutual respect.
In a powerful show of consensus, youth participants pledged to take the lead in promoting peace and discouraging actions that could fuel conflict within and beyond their communities.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Chairperson of the Kakuwa Community Dada Isaac Lemi expressed gratitude to participants, stakeholders, and government representatives for their support and active involvement.
He emphasized that the success of the mission marked a renewed beginning for unity and collaboration, urging all parties to translate commitments into sustained action on the ground.
The event was officially closed on behalf of the Governor of Central Equatoria State by the Commissioner of Yei River County, who commended the initiative as timely and impactful.
The Governor’s representative encouraged the community to institutionalize the conference as an annual event and recommended that future editions rotate across Yei, Morobo, and Lainya counties to broaden outreach and inclusivity.
Participants left the conference with a renewed sense of purpose and determination, expressing readiness to rebuild their lives and contribute to long-term stability and development.
Many described the mission as a turning point that has reignited hope for peaceful coexistence and stronger inter-community relations in the region.
As the Kakuwa Community looks ahead, the challenge now lies in sustaining the momentum generated in Yei ensuring that the signed resolution evolves from a symbolic commitment into tangible progress toward a more peaceful and cohesive society.
