Kiir directs NRA boss to ensure efficient tax and revenue collection

President Salva Kiir has instructed the Management of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) to step up efforts in revenue collection and ensure strict compliance with existing laws and regulations.

The directive came on Wednesday following a briefing from Commissioner General of the NRA, William Anyuon Kuol, on progress, challenges, and opportunities in the country’s revenue system.

Commissioner General Anyuon reported that the NRA has the capacity to generate sufficient revenue to cover government salaries, finance operational needs, and fund critical national projects.

However, he highlighted several obstacles limiting effective collection, including unwarranted tax exemptions, limited cooperation from businesses and other taxpayers, and inadequate support from some stakeholders.

“A small number of wealthy individuals and entities benefiting from exemptions have cost the government billions of dollars in potential revenue,” Anyuon told the President, emphasizing the urgent need for tighter compliance.

In response, President Kiir urged NRA officials to eliminate loopholes, enforce regulations, and ensure that all taxpayers fulfill their obligations.

He stressed that efficient revenue collection is critical for sustaining government operations, funding development projects, and stabilizing the country’s economy.

“Revenue is the lifeblood of our national development. Every exemption must be justified, and compliance must be enforced,” the President said, highlighting the government’s commitment to accountability and financial prudence.
