Kiir fires senior officials as his search for solutions continues

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has issued a series of presidential decrees effecting major changes in the national government and state leadership, relieving several senior officials from their positions.

Among those relieved of their duties are James Hoth Mai, Dak Doup Bichiok, and Angelina Teny, who was serving as Minister of Interior.

Also removed from office are Dr. Nadia Arop Dudi, Minister of Culture, Museum and National Heritage; Rin Tueny Mabor, Governor of Lakes State; Deng John Angok, Deputy Governor of Upper Nile State; and Gen. Thoi Chany Reat, Director General of the External Security Bureau.

In the same decrees, President Kiir announced a new set of appointments at affected institutions and ensuring continuity of government operations.

Gen. Aleu Ayieny Aleu was appointed Minister of Interior, replacing Angelina Teny, while Ezekial Lol Gatkuoth was named Minister of Public Service and Anthony Lino Makana appointed Minister of Labour.

While Sarah Nyanath Elijiah Yong was named Minister of Culture, Museum and National Heritage.

At the state level, Madhang Majok was appointed Governor of Lakes State, replacing Rin Tueny Mabor, while Hon. Deng Akuei Kak was named Deputy Governor of Upper Nile State.

In the security sector, Gen. Abraham Keat Bichiok was appointed Director General of the External Security Bureau.

The presidency has repeatedly emphasized that leadership changes remain one of the tools being used as the government continues its search for lasting solutions to the country’s challenges
