Kiir orders immediate restart of J1 project after 18-month halt

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed the immediate resumption of the J1 construction project in Juba, ending an eighteen-month suspension and signaling a renewed push to modernize South Sudan’s administrative infrastructure.

The President’s directive follows a high-level meeting with the project’s Oversight Committee, emphasizing that work should continue uninterrupted until completion.

To mark the restart, a delegation of senior officials, including Hon. Marik Nanga Marik, Chief Administrator in the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, and James Deng Wal, Executive Director in the Office of the President, conducted an inspection of the construction site.

Both officials confirmed that the project has entered an accelerated phase, with initial activities already underway, such as site clearing and material mobilization.

Speaking during the visit, Marik Nanga Marik described the J1 project as a “symbol of national resilience,” highlighting its importance in providing a modern, secure, and functional facility tailored to the country’s governance needs.

He further stressed that the facility will support efficient public administration and reinforce government operations in Juba.

James Deng Wal echoed these remarks, emphasizing that the President’s instructions are clear: construction must proceed without delay until the project’s targeted completion in September 2027.

He noted that the project’s timeline will be closely monitored, with adherence to quality standards a top priority.

The J1 project is being executed by RAM Civil Engineering and Consultants, whose representatives reaffirmed their commitment to meeting the timeline while maintaining the highest construction standards.

The accelerated work plan includes mobilizing materials, deploying labor, and implementing site management strategies designed to avoid further delays.

President Kiir’s directive represents a critical step toward revitalizing Juba’s administrative infrastructure, and officials have pledged regular progress updates to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the project’s duration.
