President Salva Kiir Mayardit has removed Barnaba Bak Chol as Minister of Finance and Planning and reappointed Salvatore Garang Mabiordit to the post, five years after he was dismissed from the same position.
The changes were announced in an executive order read on national television on Monday evening.
Garang previously served as finance minister before his removal in 2020, marking a notable political comeback to one of the country’s most powerful economic portfolios.
In the same set of decrees, President Kiir also dismissed Monica Achol from her role as Presidential Envoy to the Middle East, along with William Anyuol as Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority and Rou Ayii as Deputy Commissioner General.
Kiir subsequently appointed Moun Deng Ajuet as the new Commissioner General of the Revenue Authority, with Solomon Arik named as his deputy.
All appointments and dismissals take immediate effect.
The reshuffle comes amid ongoing economic pressures, with expectations that the new finance leadership will prioritize revenue collection, fiscal discipline, and public sector reforms.
