President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Tuesday renewed his directive for Ruweng Administrative Area to intensify efforts against cross-border crime, stating that improved security is vital for improving food production.

The directive was issued during a meeting at the State House, where Ruweng’s Chief Administrator, Stefano Wieu de Mialek, updated the president on the security and development situation in the administrative area.

While, Mr Wieu reported progress and relative calm within the area, he acknowledged that insecurity challenges remain, citing the presence of armed militias along Ruweng’s borders.

He sought President Kiir’s guidance on new strategies to enhance stability.

President Kiir underlined the link between regional stability and national food security, stating that securing the borders would allow local communities to safely engage in agriculture, which would in turn increase food supplies and reduce the country’s dependence on imports.

The head of state commended the efforts of the administration of Ruweng.

He offered further guidance on improving local governance and stressed that peace, stability, and unity must prevail between the people of Ruweng and their neighbors.

Ruweng Administrative Area, one of the areas with agricultural potential, has been struggling with insecurity, primarily driven by intercommunal clashes.

Recent clashes between the Ngok Dinka and the Twic East, often worsened by misunderstandings over resources such as land, have led to violent confrontations.
